How to install a Kitchen Sink?

Installing a new kitchen sink will bring aesthetic and functional improvements to your kitchen. It will really spruce up the overall appearance of your space, and your new sink might match your floors, walls, counters, and cabinets better than before. You will also reap the benefits of a new sink and might be upgrading to a garbage disposal or other accessory. Here’s a general guide for how to do it yourself:

The first and most important step is to ensure proper fitting. Most kitchen sinks are drop-ins, meaning they drop into a hole in the counter top. To make room for a drop-in, turn your new sink upside down on the part of the counter where you plan to insert it. Once it’s positioned, trace around it. Move the sink and draw another line just a little inside the first line. Read your manufacturer’s instructions for exact measurements. This is the line we will use, because the lip at the top of the sink does not actually go inside the hole. You will need an appropriate saw to drill these lines, making way for the sink.

The next step is to apply putty to your sink at the point where it will meet the counter. This will keep it secure and make sure there is no space in between. Insert the sink, and be careful not to pinch your fingers. Now that everything is in place, it’s time to work with the more mechanical aspects of the installation. You will need to mount the sink from underneath, the final step in securing the unit. This can be tricky when there are plastic mounting pieces. You will want to be sure to know the manufacturer’s instructions in full.

From here you will connect the P-trap and ensure connection of the main water supply to your sink. Turn on water supply and the faucet. Make sure all is flowing well and that you do not see any leaks. You may find that some areas need to be tightened more or need some type of plumbers tape. Once you are satisfied, fill the sink with water. This will weigh it down and let it to continue to set in. Wait for a while (perhaps even over night) before draining.

Note: If you have any attachments, you may want to add these before finalizing sink installation. It can save you quite some headache as this will give you more space. This goes for garbage disposals and sprayers. Best of luck with your project. Be sure to consult your manufacturer’s instructions for any other specific instructions.

How to install a faucet?

Installing a faucet can be a fun chore for any do-it-yourself type of person. Of course, it will be intimidating for the novice, but don’t worry this guide is here to help. We will tell you the types of tools you need and the steps you will need to take. Keep in mind that our directions might not fit exactly what you need. This is a general solution to install a new faucet, but you may have some sort of modified sink or water system.

Kohler K-14406-4 Polished Chrome

The first step is to turn off the main water valve at your sink. If you don’t do this, you will be in for a big mess. From here, remove the original faucet. To do so, unscrew the nuts that mount the unit to the paneling. Some units have the mounts on the top of the sink. You will also want to install your old sprayer at this time. Unscrew the nuts and pull the hoses out through the top of the sink. Once all of this is removed, clean and scrape any old putty or dirt so that the new unit will have a clean space.

You now want to put your new faucet in place. Before doing so, read the manual and see the recommended putty or caulk application. Follow these directions, and secure the faucet in place. Next, put the pipes through the holes in your sink. Then, go under the sink to tighten the washers and nuts, mounting the pipes under the faucet. Before adding the final turn, make sure the faucet is in place, where you will want it to be installed. During this portion of the installation, make sure you review the manufacturer’s directions thoroughly. Specific mounting instructions may vary by unit. Also, know that there is no right tool to use. Choose between wrenches and pliers as you have room.

Kohler K-15160 Polished Chrome

The next step is the most important. You now need to connect the water supply to your faucet. Make sure you know all about your type of fitting. Some require extra application, like tape. Tighten the connections, but make sure not to over do it. Go back to the sink and clean up any extra putty or caulk at the base of the faucet. After all of this, you are ready to test your connection. If someone is with you, have one person watch the sink while one looks at the pipes underneath. Turn the water supply valves to the on position and then do the same for the faucet. Make sure you have good flow and check for leaks immediately. If you don’t see any noticeable problems, you are good to go and have completed installation. Just be sure to keep a watchful eye or your unit for weeks to come. Leaks can seriously damages cabinets and counters.

The History of Kohler

Kohler is an american quality manufacturer of plumbing products and well known for it’s designer sinks and faucets. While the plumbing products are the most popular items, Kohler also build engines, generators and even furniture. The company was founded in 1873 by John Michael Kohler, an immigrant from Austria, a small country located in the mountain region next to Germany. Ten years later the first bathtub was built.

Top of the line products include cast iron bathtubs, Kohler is one of the very few manufacturers left in the United States still building this kind of traditional tub. One of the most popular bathtubs sold by Kohler today is the Devonshire K-1184-LA-0, an old world elegance acrylic white tub.

Kohler always stands for high quality, no matter if sinks, faucets or other products, you can expect an appealing design and very solid and durable plumbing products that will last for a very long time. Another big plus is that getting replacement parts is very easy.

The company with headquarters in Wisconsin is still owned by the family and run by a grandson of the founder, showing that trust and continuity are still around in our modern economy.

Kohler serial numbers explained

All sinks and faucets from Kohler have individual serial number that allow an easy identification of the respective item or spare part. Serial numbers start with a K for Kohler, followed by a number specifying the series and model.

K-11352 for example is a disposal flange that fits standard garbage disposal units. In order to make it fit the color of your Kohler faucet, you need to make sure the two letter code at the end is the correct one since it defines the color.

While some of these color codes for faucets and sinks are abbreviations of the color name, some do not correlate directly.

AF = (Vibrant) French Gold
CP = Polished Chrome
BN = (Vibrant) Brushed Nickel
BV = (Vibrant) Brushed Bronze
BRZ = Oil-Rubbed Bronze
BS = Brushed Stainless
BX = (Vibrant) Brazen Bronze
G = Brushed Chrome
PB = (Vibrant) Polished Brass
NA = Not Applicable, see product description!
SN = Brushed Nickel
VS = (Vibrant) Stainless

Color codes of non-metal colors often have a number instead of the two letters:

0 = White
7 = Black
47 = Almond
96 = Biscuit
B11 = Ice, for glass sinks

There are some other color and material codes around, often used for accessories:
ST = Stainless Steel

Always make sure to pick the item by color code and not by the image only. While many online merchants display images for each color variation there may be some missing or wrong images. Some photos may look darker, brighter or different from the actual color, trust the hard facts only. Getting e.g. the wrong color could delay any home improvement project, so make sure to have a close look at the serial numbers.
